A complete guide to the Mortal Critters universe
A dark epic fantasy set in a medieval multiverse of mysticism and magic.
'The Empire stretches across the world map, pink ~ like the blotches on a drunkard’s face.'
There is something wrong in the 5th World. Quite simply, the 5th World is broken. The timelines have begun to merge, and mortal heroes of antiquity struggle for supremacy with Immortals and menacing Dark Critters.
A medieval epic where plots, high treason, intrigue, murder, war, and witchcraft intertwine: The Sagas are set during the Crusades and the 100 Years' War, when a young Elisabeth II is emerging as a potential Queen.
The storylines twirl around individual protagonists of differing ages, races, genders, and sexual orientations as they fight to survive in a very brutal world where the Witches, Wizards, Fairies, and the Dreaded Inquisitors and Knights Templar clash and plot intrigues.
The English monarchy is the head of the greatest empire the world has ever seen, yet uneasy lies the head, for all is not well, especially in the region North of the Gap, where unrest simmers. It is led by the Freethinkers, women of knowledge, and a horde of subversive religious heretics, including the Old Druids.
The Inquisitors rigorously enforce the King’s laws with constant harrying, and it seems that the King will subdue the malcontents until he goes a step too far and introduces the Cultural Laws.
During this unrest, the Great Empire continues to expand, like a huge machine devouring country after country, but it faces constant threats from the unification of the Holy Roman Empire, the rise of Old Cathay, rebellion in the American Colonies, and the old enemies of España and France. And yet the worst threat of them all is from the King’s own cousins and family, who are desperate to grasp the power.
A young Sir Thomas Henry Valentine Deveroux spies for the Empire under the guise of being one of the great literary minds of the age, but he is having trouble finishing his latest novel. His mother bullies him, his father has disinherited him, and his lover is a known witch and freethinking woman. An old acquaintance is murdered. His mentor disappears, and a smuggler finds a body in Camden Lock.
Deveroux’s loyalty is torn between the Templars, the Empire, and the Crown. The Cultural Laws are introduced, the Inquisition is in full swing, and the sadistic Witch Finder General prosecutes all who fall beneath his grasp. Deveroux meets a beautiful Chinese girl, and chaos erupts around him. And so begins the hunt for a lost treasure, the fight for liberty, and the struggle for equality.
Mortal Critters ~ The first book in a trilogy that tells the Sagas of the 5th Worlde and the battle between Mortals, Immortals, and Dark Critters.
Mortal Critters transmigrate upon their death from Worlde to Worlde. Immortal Critters are tethered to one world in perpetuity. In compensation, the Gods have given them Magical powers. Dark Critters move between all the worlds in the form of Shadow Beings that only ever appear in the penumbra of your peripheral vision. They feed on the negative elements created by humans, including the seven sins: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth. But also the human condition; mental health: specifically doubt, insecurity, and depression.
